OPI: When Monkeys Fly! Top Coat Swatch & Review

OPI: When Monkeys Fly! is a clear top coat with gold hexagon glitter and part of the Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful Nail Lacquer Collection. I have already reviewed Julep’s Avery, this is for When Monkeys Fly! only.

OPI: When Monkeys Fly! Top Coat Review

When Monkeys Fly! is a pretty top coat but it comes with its problem.

Some batches of this nail polish were found to “curl” in what is known as “taco curling” (the glitter would curl like a taco). The taco curls would easily come off taking the entire nail polish along with it. OPI’s facebook was heavily bashed by purchasers who felt cheated due to the taco curls.

OPI’s facebook page responded with:

If you own When Monkey’s Fly and experience this issue, OPI will replace your nail polish with another shade from the Oz collection if you sent an email to their customer support at http://mail.opi.com/HelpDesk/HelpDesk.nsf/WTSF?OpenForm

I didn’t experience too much of the taco curling but I notice that my nails would turn yellow under wherever the gold hexagon glitter was. So I would have round yellow spots of yellow under my nail (so please use a base coat even if you’re using this top coat on top of another nail polish, since it happen to me WITH a nail polish coat under).

I did experience enough of the taco curling that I contacted OPI over it and requested a different shade by giving OPI by batch number which is found on the bottom.

About 3.5 weeks later, I received for free Lights of Emerald City and I was told that I did not have to return OPI When Monkeys Fly! That was pretty nice of them, though it took a lot of negative press before OPI took action.

In terms of glitter distribution, the glitter is NOT uniform and you can sort of move the big hexagon around to get it where you want it to go (i.e. spread it around your nails otherwise it bunches up).

With all of that said, if you end up getting this glitter, note that taco glitter is not 100% certain, just a high probability. And you may have a free nail polish sent to you in case it does (while supplies last though, we do not know when will OPI stop this “promotion”). The promotion started in March, but an end date was never given. Your mileage may vary.
